Understand what has happened
If something has happened online that upsets your child or puts them in danger, you should act quickly to stop it or report it.
These situations can feel frightening or upsetting, so it’s important to try and remember to:
- stay calm
- ask questions and understand what has happened
- not blame your child for the situation
- reassure your child that you will solve the problem together
Understanding what has happened and how it affects your child can help you decide what to do.
Questions you could ask your child:
- I can see that something is worrying you, can I help?
- can we talk about this?
- can you explain to me how it happened, so we can fix it together?
- remember, I’m always here to help, no matter how big the problem might feel
The types of content you can report
It can be hard to know when something your child sees online should be reported, especially if you are unsure of what you can report.
Anyone can make a report, it does not have to be an adult.
You can report content that shows:
- child sexual abuse
- terrorism
- bullying, threats, harassment, hate speech, and content promoting self-harm or suicide
- accounts that pretend to be someone else (often called impersonation)
- online abuse, unwanted sexual advances and violence
- pornographic material (that appears in places that are not just for adults)
Where you can report something
Here are some of the places you can report your online safety concerns directly to. This includes reporting images, messages, or comments, and video content.
Under the Online Safety Act, any service that children are likely to use must have an easy way for parents and children to report harmful content.
